Steam's 7-Day Trade Hold, Explained

What the hold is

When a CS2 item moves between Steam accounts, Valve applies a 7-day trade protection hold at its new home. For that week, the new owner can equip and use the item, and cannot trade or sell it.

Valve built the hold to make stolen accounts less profitable, since an attacker cannot sell the inventory straight away. The rule applies the same way on every marketplace, including this one.

Why it slows CS2 deliveries

The hold starts when an item moves, which means the last time it changed hands, not the moment you buy.

CS2 skins trade often, through unboxing, trade-ups and moves between accounts. At any time, many live listings belong to items still inside a hold. The seller cannot send until that week ends, and your order waits for the remainder.

Dota 2 items change hands less, so many sit well past any hold and arrive in minutes. The rules match across both games, and the age of the inventory differs.

What the estimate on a listing means

Each listing shows that seller's average hand-over time, taken from their completed trades. Treat it as a track record.

A multi-day estimate on a CS2 skin points to an item mid-hold, which is ordinary. A poor completion rate deserves more of your attention, since it separates a slow trade from one that never completes.

Planning around it

  • â–¸Buying to use costs you nothing, since you can equip the skin when it lands
  • â–¸Buying to resell means budgeting the week, because your item starts a fresh hold on arrival
  • â–¸Buying for a date means ordering well ahead, since no marketplace can shorten the hold

Claims of instant CS2 delivery

Some marketplaces advertise instant delivery or no trade hold on CS2 items. Nobody can remove a hold that Valve applies. Those claims describe listings that have already passed their hold, which helps you on that listing and tells you nothing about the platform.

The takeaway

The hold applies to everyone and sits outside any marketplace's control. What a marketplace can do is show you the seller's real record, state the worst case, and let you cancel for a refund until the item reaches you.
